India's Northeast, is a region in flux as it undergoes rapid urbanisation, development and in some parts, on-going conflict or newfound peace. Against this backdrop, we explore the region's subcultures and look at how such a context has given rise to new issues, ideas and in many cases, the forging of new cultural frontiers. We encounter young Northeasterners who are actively shaping the future, from Naga youth who, after pursuing educational and career opportunities in Indian and overseas metropolises are now returning to their native Nagaland, to inject entrepreneurial life into the once conflict-ridden state,to Manipur-based AMADA, an anti-drug organisation started by students, which through vigilante-style activities is working to curb the state’s drug problem. Other contributors have uncovered how popular culture has played out in unusual ways – from the craze for bihu (Assam’s traditional song and dance) videos that have inspired ethnic Assamese dress to come back in fashion, to how football has been employed as a way of uniting Naga political factions in conflict. Our photographically richest issue yet, our photo essays, to name a few, include a creative series stemming from a social experiment (a Bangalore-based photographer hangs out for three weeks with the first person he meets in Dimapur, Nagaland) to photographer Gauri Gill’s bringing us a glimpse into the life and words of Manipur icon Irom Sharmila. This issue is about looking at the grassroots, fresh and dogged ways in which people who comprise the Northeast are putting their places on the map.
