Stargazing, in whatever form it’s taken up in, is one of our oldest impulsions. In this issue, we move beyond stargazing as habitual celebrity voyeurism or backyard astronomy. We look at the groups who are stars in their own right, from the hijra beauty pageant contestants who became role models for the marginalised community, to the top Indian athletes who have shown gritty resolve to get to where they are today, often with very little help along the way. We are taken to Lahore, where the city’s cultural and film industry stalwarts are upholding a tradition of filmmaking in an increasingly restive nation. We also turn to stars of the celestial kind, at astronomy and astrology in their various contemporary manifestations. An expose on astrology reveals how soothsayers are modernising their practice with entrepreneurial zeal. We look at “eclipse chasers” and the facilitators who are helping these hobbyists get their fix and our profile on Rohini Devasher uncovers an artist whose latest endeavour involves working with people obsessed with the night sky. An encounter with a stargazer of a different kind is revealed in our story about a small number of Indian followers of the “UFO religion,” Raelism. From astrology to astronomy to the atypical role models found across the country, this is a round-up of India’s stars.
